SORRY NICE PEOPLE ONLY

Amber Leung with sticky date pudding

Amber's an old school friend from Burnside. We went out for dinner in Lyttelton in the weekend to this place called Satchmo. We had pizza and sticky date pudding but the best bit was the lady who played piano and sang the whole way through the meal. She sounded like Eva Cassidy.

Me and Dayne at La Perle

Back in June last year when Dayne and I were in Paris for the menswear shows, we kept going to this bar called La Perle in the Marais but it was really hard to find even though we were there almost every night. So every night we'd be walking down the street and trying to ask French people in our bad French where La Perle was but we couldn't say the name properly and it always came out like, "La Puhhhhhhle," and the French people would just look at us funny then walk away. We'd usually find it in the end though.

Leaving Paris

I shot this little video on the train to Charles De Gaulle. The song is Plus Fort Que Nous by Francis Lai from the Un Homme Et Une Femme soundtrack.

Me and Tom Jones at French Cafe. So there we were, sitting at The French Cafe, minding our business, when somebody walked past our table saying "Oh my God! Tom Jones is sitting over there!" It so happened that our tables (mine and Tom's) were the last two to leave, and when he walked past to pay, I asked for a quick photo. He was very friendly and very tanned. You might notice the slight contrast in our skin colours above. He's touring here in New Zealand at the moment.

Our waiter was this awesome guy named Edward. Alongside working at The French Cafe he designs a menswear label called Pellizzaro. Check it out here.

Dinner at The French Cafe

A bunch of us went to The French Cafe last night for dinner. It's supposedly New Zealand's best restaurant. Definitely the best I've ever been to.

Musical tees

I have a growing collection of musical tee shirts - so far I've got a Cats tee, a Les Miserables tee and a Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tee (thanks to my flatmate Murray). My favourite of the three is the Cats tee, but my favourite of the musicals is Les Miserables - I've seen it three times, twice in Christchurch and once on the West End in London. I love it so much that I'd see it every time it comes to town.

Reaching Esther

I've been friends with Esther for about four and a half years, three or so of which she's lived in London. She's 5'11" with legs longer than the Tower of Babel, she's funny and rude and about as intelligent as anybody I know. Did I mention she's a high powered lawyer? We were out last night and she caught the attention of this guy on Ponsonby Road. Within three minutes, seven of his friends had come along and were buying her drinks and chatting her up. It was a beautiful thing to watch. I only ever get to see her for a day or two at a time these days, but they're always some of my favourite days.

Blood Brothers

I've been semi adopted into the Lowe family. Katherine and James' Dad took us all out to lunch for the second time yesterday. We ate Japanese. At the end, he hugged Katherine, then James, then shook my hand. I reckon next time I'll get a hug too.

Closer at the Basement Theatre

Closer in the flesh was an interesting experience. The play had been directed to mirror the film - the blocking, the accents (on the men at least) and the dialogue was all replicated exactly. It was a play before it was a film, but I'd be surprised if the original play looked like this. It worked well with the character of Larry (Clive Owen in the film), because the actor played the part with the right mix of arrogance, anger and scorn, but the character of Dan (Jude Law) was way overacted. It was like a campy, over-the-top version of Jude Law.

Alice and Anna were both good, and I'd recommend seeing it to anyone who's a fan of relationship dynamics, sexual politics and raw dialogue. I watched the film for the first time (back in 2004) after a pretty volatile breakup and I was amazed at how accurately the dialogue captured the emotion of that moment when it's all over.

Go see it - details are here.

My mate Damo

I used to work with Damien Lay at Little Brother. Now he's a high powered news desk guy at TVNZ. He called me up out of the blue last night and asked me to go to the opening of Closer at the Basement Theatre. We're both ridiculous Natalie Portman fans - and fans of the film, so we couldn't wait to see what the live play would be like.
